CHURCHES
|
This Church was originally built in 1868 as a Methodist Church. Dalton-in-Furness was the capital of the Furness district. It was a town long before Barrow was ever thought of. It was only the beginning of the production of iron and steel which led to Barrow becoming a ship building town. The Church building has seen many changes during its history. After being a Methodist Church for a period of time, it then became an auction room and then a printing establishment. The Church of Christ purchased the building in the early years of 20th Century. We purchased in 1986 and moved into the Church in 1987.An outstanding feature in the Church is the Reredos, an altar screen at the front of the Church. This beautiful piece of church furniture was designed and carved by Arthur W Simpson, of Kendal. It was built in 1905 for Christ Church in Whitehaven. It was reinstalled in the Church of Christ in Dalton in 1978
When we purchased the property from the Church of Christ the Reredos was too large to fit into their new premises and we were asked if we would make a donation for the Reredos. Pastor R Surridge, President of the North England Conference, gladly gave them the sum of £100. At the same time we purchased their communion table for £50. A new kitchen and lounge area have been built in the basement. Email:
